Our u21 team bowed out of the champinship after a hard fought game against Leitrim /kilnadeema last Sunday. Leitrim were the first to score .Portumna squandered alot of chances in the first ten minutes which in the end came back to haunt them. Martin Dolphin was the first Portumna player to get on thre scoreboard with a pointed free and it was the same player who minutes later added another point from a free. With the wind against them Leitrim settled well into the game and put over five unanswered points before Portumna got their only score from play from the stick of Owen Treacy. Ger Kelly struck a long range free which was well fielded by Martin Dolphin and when he was brought to ground on the edge of the square he had nothing only goal on his mind when he stood over the free and he duly delivered. This put Portumna a point ahead going in at the interval. With a strong wind behind them in the second half Leitrim got off to a good start and struck over four points without reply.Portumna scored three points from frees through Owen Treacy and Martin Dolphin and things began to look up when Ronan Hayes found the net after a goal mouth scramble. Portumna were just coming into the game when disaster struck a goal mouth scramble at the other end resulted in a goal. This was to end Portumnas run in the championship and they were beaten on a scoreline 2-7 1-14. The different in the two teams Leitrim were able to score at their ease while Portumna had to fight hard to get their scores and a point from play in the whole hour would not be worthy to win any game. A big thank you to to the management team of Johnny Keane Garret Heagney Eoin Lynch and Mike Dolphin for all their hard work with this bunch of lads.

Well done to the Junior A team and management on reaching the Gullanes Hotel Junior A county final. They beat Sarsfields by the narrowest of margains in the county semi final.Sarsfields got the better start while Portumna wasted many chances by their over eagerness of going for goal chances.Portumna finally settled down and scored two points from frees through Davy Canning and Tomas Quinn. In the 26th minute Paddy Dolphin was in the right place to blast the ball to the Sarsfields net. A point from Joe Keane meant the teams went in at half time Portumna one point down on a scoreline 0-7 to 1-3. Five minutes after the resumption the teams were on level terms after a Dave Canning point from a free. Ciaran Ryan put Portumna ahead for the first time with a well taken point. With ten minutes remaining Sarsfields levelled but Ciaran Ryan restored the lead again. Sarsfields desperately sought to draw level but were guilty of some poor shooting but with time running out they sought the score that was needed. Ronan Hayes fielded a high ball from the puck out only to be brought to ground and the free resulted in Davy Canning punishing the Sarsfields defence with a point to bring them to a County final meeting with Gort. A draw looked on the cards and I suppose it was harsh on Sarsfields who propably deserved a second chance but sport can be cruel and time just ran out Portumna were happy when Joe Larkin blew up for full time. Portumna know they have alot of work to do yet as their performance on Sunday would win them no County final but they have time to up their performance and bridge a twenty eight year gap not having won the title since 1982.
The senior team play Loughrea on Sunday in the Cooper county semi final in Athenry. Throw in at 3-45pm. A massive crowd is expected in Athenry on Sunday so people will need to travel early.Best of luck to team and management.

Thanks to Kilmacud for the great day the club looked after them well and the boys thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Well done to our senior hurlers on powering into another county semi final. The quarter final against Mullagh was somewhat a strange contest where the Mullagh men failed to recover from early self inflicted blow in front of a good crowd in Duggan Park Ballinasloe. Mullagh were left dazed by concession of three avoidable goals in the opening quarter. Mullagh were the first to open their account with a point from Conor Dervan. The first Portumna goal came from Conor O Hare who whipped the ball to the net after a cross field ball was delivered by Andy Smith.Kevin Hayes scored Portumna's second goal after a mistake by Eric Ward the Mullagh keeper Kevin Hayes was on target for Portumnas third goal after Damien Hayes made one of his boilting runs drew the Mullagh defence and unselfishly delivered a pin point ball to Chunky who made no mistake with his effort. It was ninteen minutes before Portumna registered their first point from Niall Hayes and a point from Joe Canning and Damien Hayes gave Portumna a six point lead at the interval on a scoreline 3-3 to 0-6. Mullagh needed a good start to the second half but it was Joe Canning who scored the first second half point.Points from Damien Hayes Conor O Hare and Joe Canning including one of his trade mark sideline cuts gave them a ten point lead with only forty minutes gone.Points from O Hare and Canning ended the game one would have to mention the impressive display of Conor O Hare who registered 1-2 in the game . Johnny Kellys men have now set up a semi final meeting with their great rivals Loughrea on Sunday week in Athenry.
Best of luck to our Junior A team when they play Sarsfields on Sunday in Killimor at 3pm in the county semi final.

Portroe had a point to prove but it never lived up to expectations as Portumna ran out worthy winners on a scoreline 5-12 to Portroe 3-2.

Our junior A hurlers have reached the semi final stages of the county championship after seeing off Pearses at the week-end on a scoreline 3-12 to 1-8. After producing some very impressive displays in the group games they needed to submit a similiar gritty display if they were to account for their opponents and that they did. Boosted by the return of John O Flaherty and Joe Keane the junior A team laid the foundation for victory with a fantastic first half display to give them a seven point lead at the interval. Pearses had no answer to Dave Canning who was on top form accounting for 1-4 of Portumna 's scores in the first half with the other scores coming from Ciaran Ryan 1-1 and Steve Killeen 0-1.
Playing against a stiff breeze in the second half Portumna needed a good start and when Paddy Dolphin was brought to ground on the edge of the square after a high tackle Dave Canning duly delivered when he buried the ball to the net. Ronan Hayes who replaced Paddy after this incident scored two points while Dave added another 0-4 to his tally .Conor Mulddon had a quite evening in goals and he was ably assisted by a strong full backline of Reamann Mc Entee, John O Flaherty and Johnny Keane. Tomas Quinn was rock solid at centre back and he received good cover from his other half backs Conor Broderick and Ian Flaherty. Ivan Muldoon and Shane O Rourke won the battle in the middle of the park while the half forward line of Eaman Lynch and Joe Keane battled well with Ciaran Ryan putting in a fine performance. Dave Canning was easily the best forward on view with Paddy Dolphin and Steve Killeen the other two inside forwards.
Well done to Owen Treacy who was on the Galway under 16 team which participated in the Tipperary Supporters Tournament last Week-end. Owen lined out in goals for the team who beat Waterford Cork and Kilkenny.Unfortunately they suffered defeat at the hands of a very strong Tipperary team in the final.

The minors resumed their championship campaign after a long break due to exams last Friday evening against Oranmore-Maree in Craughwell. Portumna got off to
a good start and were five points ahead going in at the interval with the scores coming from Owen Treacy 0-3 Jamie Conboy 1-0 and Ronan O Meara 0-6 who was
causing quite a few problems for the Oranmore defence. The score at half time Portumna 1-9 Oranmore 0-7 with all to play for in the second half.Oranmore
battled well in the second half and scoring point after point gradually reduced Portumna lead but once again Owen Treacy and Ronan O Merara showed leadership
and between them added 1-5 to their first half tally with Owen scoring one point and Ronan 1-4. Oranmore had 1-10 added to their first half tally with only
minutes remaining then came the killer blow Oranmore got a goal after a major skermish at the goalmouth it was hard on the lads after dominating all through
the game to be beaten by the last puck of the ball but thats sport. It has to be said it was a great game of hurling and their was some fine individual on
both sides with Brian Mannion and Johnathan Cormican showing good leadership in defence and were well assisted by Simon Curran Graham Fogarty Eoin Harte
and Michael Ward. Owen Treacy gave a good performance at centre field and got good assistance from Jamie Blake. Colin Burke had a great game at centre
forward and supplied good ball inside to the full forward line he was abbly assisted by Padraig Mulddon and Oisin Royston. Ronan O Meara at full forward
proved quite a handful for the Oranmore full back line with Jamie Conboy and Jamie Flanagan the two corner forwards. Final score Portumna 2-14 Oranmore 2-17.
Portumna now play Cois Fharraige on Friday at 7:30 in Ballindereen in the next round of the minor championship.
Our junior B team suffered another defeat in their championship against Kinvara in Kilbeacanty last Sunday evening. This was a game which Portumna badly
needed to win to remain in the competition after already suffering defeats to Bearna na Forbacha and Castlegar. Tristan Hoary was the first Portumna person
to score from a free with Vinnie Sellars adding four points three from frees and a good score from a 65. Shane Connors was one of the goal scorers with
Damien Coleman scoring Portumnas second goal from a twenty one yard free. Damien came up all the way from goals to drive the ball to the roof of the Kinvara
net. There was only a point in the difference at half time on a scoreline Portumna 2-5 Kinvara 2-6. All was to play for in the second half however Kinvara
were the team who settled better in the second half and added 1-6 to their first half tally while Portumna only added three points Vinnie Sellars 0-2 from
frees Johnathan Fahy 0-1 Johnathan point was the only point which came from play and the sending off of two Portumna players just showed what a fraustrating
day they were having and this certainly did not help their cause.
Their next game is against Ahascragh - Fohenagh on the week-end 18th July.
The junior A team play Gort in the next round of the championship on Wednesday evening in Kilbeacanty at 7:30 They have maximum points after two games and a

Our junior B team suffered another defeat in the championship at the week-end this time at the hands of Castlegar. Having beaten Castlegar all ready in the league the confidence was high going into the game but this was not to be the case as Castlegar ran out worthy winners and had eight points to spare in the finish. Alan Gorman was the first Portumna player to get his name on the scoreboard but two goals by Castlegar in about five minutes was a killer blow. But in fairness to Portumna they did not panic and four points from Brian Dolphin with Portumna's first half goals coming from Stephen Treacy(2-0) and Declan Madden (1-0) meant they went in at the interval two points down on a scoreline 3-5 to 2-10. All was to play for in the second half but unfortunately Portumna were only able to add another four points to their tally with the goal coming from a well taken free by Damien Coleman and a point from Stephen Treacy while Castlegar added 1-7 to their first half tally bringing the scores at the end of the game to Portumna 4-6 Castlegar 3-17.Portumna now need to win their two remaining games if they are to stay in the competition.
On the juvenile front Portumna under 12 team were beaten by Cappattagle last Monday evening by a point. They were in hard luck a goal from a free in the dying seconds of the game denied them their first win in the competition. A point in any game is always a dangerous lead as was to prove in this case and it was hard luck on these young lads who played their hearts out a draw would have been the fairest result but sadly thats sport and there has to be a winner. Portumna's goal scorers were David O Meara Mark O Sullivan and Jack Canning.Final score Portumna 3-0 Cappattagle 3-2.
Best of luck to Dermot Brien and the under 10 team when they play Loughrea in the quarter final of their competition.

Portumna went in at the interval with a seven point lead on a scoreline 0-13 to 1-3.
The game was over as a contest in the second half when Niall Hayes scored on the third minute after receiving a great pass from Leo Smith. Further points from Joe Canning Eoin Lynch Damien Hayes Kevin Hayes and Peter Smith finished the game and when Joe Canning collected a pass from Andy Smith there was nothing on his mind but goal when he powered his way past the Kinvara rear guard and he duly delivered when he blast the ball past Colm Callanan net. Our senior hurlers were well beaten in their league game against Sarsfields on Sunday. Fielding only four of the regulars due to eight of our players been called up for duty with Galway and Leo with Westmeath and some injuries we were at a disadvantage from the start. Well done to the lads who lined out they did their best and did not let the side down.Ivan Canning had the unusual role of playing full forward in which he got on the score sheet. Martin Dolphin was causing problems at centre forward until he had to be substituted with an injury thankfully it is not as serious as what was first thought a few weeks rest and he should be back in full flight for the championship.Shane O Rourke was another casulty in the game in which he substained a broken finger. A big thank you to all the people who sold tickets and purchased tickets for our All Ireland fundraiser. Also thanks to all the people who contributed to the training fund. Your support was appreciated.
There was heartbreak for Portumna senior hurlers on St Patricks day. Unfortunately Ballyhale Shamrocks were the better team on the day. This brings Ballyhale top of the club hurling roll with five titles. Unfortunately our dreams of winning an historic third All Ireland title in a row and the fact that we have gone 29 matches unbeaten in the championship has come to an end. Portumna did not hurl like the way we know they can, they did not come close to hurling to their ability. We know they are far better than the way they hurled but they were beaten on the day by a side hungry for revenge.
With fifteen minutes gone Portumna found themselves five points down but Joe Canning was outstanding and kept things ticking over his ability to score points from all angles and from placed balls was amazing. When Portumna got back within four points things began to look up but disaster struck an error by Ivan resulted in a goal for the Shamrocks. This was to be the sucker bunch and the lads were unable to recover from it. These lads need to regroup now; they are still a young team with lots of spirit and confidence and there will be good days again for Portumna. Portumna are still a fantastic team who were beaten by a better team on the day.
We can have few regrets. Portumna have been tremendous champions and our silverware is by no means finished by any manner of means. We still have some seriously talented hurlers and these boys have something to strive for now to get back to winning ways and to set about winning the Galway County championship again this year and a return to Croke Park in 2011 is not out of the question.
Well done lads ye have given us seven years of wonderful memories three All Ireland titles and five County titles and this is only the beginning you are a credit to the club to your families and to your parish and we are all proud of you.
